Duke of Ed Adventurous Journeys:
Bronze, Silver, Gold
Come on an adventure with us! We will support you as you plan and complete your Bronze, Silver or Gold Adventurous Journey.
We set aside a day for planning and training, where we teach you the basics of the activity you will be doing (sea kayaking, tramping, mountain biking). We also help you plan your meals, your camping set up and any other skills and knowledge you might need for the journey.
Then we head out together – first on a Practice Journey and then later on a Qualifying Journey – so that you can put your skills into practice and build confidence. Your group gets to work together towards a goal, while building friendships and having fun!
Activities
In Auckland, we are able to run sea kayaking, tramping and trail riding (mountain biking) Journeys.
Please check out the Upcoming Journeys to see what is coming up.
Or else get together your own group of 4-8 people and create your own Journey (enquire to find out more).
Locations
Part of the thrill of the Adventurous Journey is that you get to plan and execute your own Journey!
We can support you and suggest potential locations, based on our 40+ years of experience, but the final location will depend on:
- Which Award you are doing (Bronze, Silver, Gold)
- Which activity you are doing (sea kayaking, tramping, mountain biking),
- The time of year (summer, winter)
- The weather (we follow strict safety protocols for all activities and we make sure everyone is adequately equipped for whatever weather is expected, e.g. warm clothes, wet weather gear, etc.)
Here are some location suggestions:
TRAMPING
- Waitakere Ranges
- Kaimai Ranges
- Pirongia
SEA KAYAKING
- Auckland’s East Coast
- Hauraki Gulf and islands
- Coromandel
- Northland

MOUNTAIN BIKING / TRAIL RIDING

Our instructors
The purpose of the Duke of Ed Adventurous Journey is to introduce you to the skills necessary for your group to plan and execute your own journey. Our instructors will teach you the basic skills and then provide support as you move through this process with your group.
Our instructors are qualified (through the New Zealand Outdoor Instructors Association, NZ’s national qualification body for outdoor instructing qualifications) and are experienced and deployed to a high standard for all the activities you will be doing.
They are also trained and deployed under our thorough Safety Management System (read more) and they are first aid trained. Meet our Auckland instructors here.

Safety
Our classroom is the wild and untamed places of Aotearoa New Zealand. It is full of beauty, challenges and (of course) a fair few hazards. Our job is to manage those hazards and we have robust processes in place for this.
Your safety is our highest priority.
We have a thorough Safety Management System which includes a Safety Assessment Management Plan (SAMPs) and Safe Operating Policies (SOPs).
We are regularly audited by WorkSafe New Zealand (the government’s workplace health and safety regulator).
We are also audited and safety accredited by AdventureMark (New Zealand’s largest adventure certification body).
All our instructors are Police vetted to work with young people.
We are also Pest-Free certified (this is especially important when kayaking in the Hauraki Gulf).
Read more the about our Safety policies here.
If you have any questions, please contact Mark, our Safety and Training Manager (contact options).
