Māori word of the month: hīmata

The start of the year is a time of new beginnings. We make new year’s resolutions. We vow to kick those bad habits. Start again, start anew. It is a time of reflecting and refreshing ourselves.

Does it work for you? Do you start the year feeling refreshed and motivated?

Does the feeling stay with you, or does it dissipate?

Personally, I love setting goals, it makes me feel motivated, but I have learned that the motivation disappears pretty quickly! So I’m trying instead to give it my best shot, then practice self-compassion when I slip off the motivation wagon, and instead of giving up, practice beginning again. And again. And again. There is always a new month, a new week, a new day. A perfect opportunity to begin again!

What works for you?
