AUCKLAND OUTDOOR INSTRUCTOR

COME ON AN ADVENTURE WITH US!
Due to increased demand for our outdoor adventure programmes, we currently have a full-time field instructor job vacancy in our Auckland office. Auckland instructors lead groups on adventures across Northland, Auckland, Waikato and Central North Island.

All our instructor positions involve travelling to different parts of our beautiful country, organising and leading groups on adventures that teach practical outdoor skills and encourage deeper connection to nature and to each other.

WE MAKE POSITIVE CHANGE IN PEOPLE’S LIVES
We work with a range of clients, from upcoming student leaders to youth offenders, to people with disabilities, to adults that struggling with mental health problems, to people keen to feel closer to nature.

PREFERRED SKILLS AND QUALITIES
• Diploma or Degree in outdoor education, recreation, adventure, instructing or equivalent studies
• NZOIA qualifications in any discipline
• Experience working with groups
• Current first aid certificate
• Current full drivers’ licence and P endorsement (or the ability to gain one)

JOB VACANCY: Auckland outdoor instructor

We are looking for an outdoor instructor for our Auckland office! But don’t be fooled by the not-very-outdoorsy-sounding location! Our Auckland instructors go gallivanting all over the place … the stunning beaches of Northland, the rugged bush of the Kaimai Ranges in Coromandel, the plains of the Central North Island. Plus, the hidden beauty inside Auckland: the coastal beauty of the Waitākere Ranges as well as the numerous bays and coves and inlets of the Manukau Harbour for our kayaking, surfing, coasteering missions.

Who is Adventure Specialties?

We are a charity founded in a garage in 1984 that has now grown to be a national organisation with over 20 permanent staff. We combine outdoor adventure with a deeper purpose – a look at the parts of life that are truly important

What do we do?

Our two different ‘categories’ of outdoor adventure programmes are “Adventure With Purpose” and “Adventure Therapy”

>>> Adventure With Purpose aims at building self-awareness, social awareness, cultural awareness, environmental awareness, and a desire to be physically active.

>>> Adventure Therapy aims at increasing a person’s self-worth, building tools for hauora (health and wellness), creating a feeling of community and belonging (whanaungatanga), building a sense of hope for a future with purpose, and increasing taha wairua (spiritual wellness)

Which outdoor pursuits do we do?

Take your pick from our broad range of pursuits: alpine, abseiling, bush, caving, canyoning, coasteering, mountain biking, rock climbing, sea kayaking, surfing, and white water kayaking/rafting. Get experience in lots of these, and pursue the ones that you want to get qualified in, through the national NZOIA qualification scheme.

Farewell to a beloved instructor, Laura.

After 3+ years of amazing outdoor adventuring, Laura is moving on to a new adventure, working for a local high school in an outdoor education role.

Laura, here are some comments from the staff:

> Tim says, “Laura has been one of those Instructors that brings laughter and fun to any environment and we will miss her bubbliness around the office and in the field! Her students have been very privileged to have her guiding them through parts of their lives as they have tramped, kayaked and done many other activities together! All the best Laura for your new chapter, thanks for all your hard Mahi and making a difference to so many!”

When Tim asked Laura what where the best parts about working at Adventure Specialties Trust, this is what she replied:

“1. The awesome culture and staff.

2. The depth of facilitation with participants. We talk about the deep stuff, the hard stuff.

3. The ‘Journeys’ (10-21 day outdoor programmes) with the depth of relationships formed on them with the participants and other instructors.”

Laura wants to clarify that she is still doing her 3000km bike fundraiser this year, to raise money to fund a wahine leadership programme.

Five Fun Facts about Kyle:

1. I proposed to my wife, Christina, with a ring that I made from a Singapore dollar coin. I spent about 7 months slowly working at it when I had time and all I used was a hammer, drill and a rat’s tail file. The cool part about this was that I spent ages trying to work out how I could make a ring with no official jewellery tools before I stumbled across a way to make a ring out of a coin. The very next day, Christina was given a bag of old foreign coins at work, and she asked me if I wanted them. God works in amazing ways as I don’t collect coins and she had no idea about my plans of making a ring.

2. When I’m not at work instructing Outdoor pursuits, my main hobby is Windsurfing. I got into the sport when I was 14 and have been watching the weather for the next big storm ever since.

3. I also really enjoy rock climbing. Although its cool to find your limit as to how hard you can climb, I really enjoy the easy climbs. Weirdly enough, I really enjoy the rope systems, forward thinking and problem solving like when you set up a belay and have to think about the possibilities of what you might have to do while seconding and how you will deal with it, where everything will go to keep the belay station tidy and functional etc.

4. I’ve spent most of my life living on Waiheke Island. I’ve spent the last 14 years commuting daily from the island to various parts of Auckland for High School, University, Sports and Work. That’s actually how I met my wife as she was working in the café on the ferry. I have only just moved off the island, and the hustle and bustle of Auckland is a struggle to get use to….. and we are still in lock down!!

5. When I was five years old, I really wanted to name my younger brother Hercules. That’s not what they named him and little five-year-old me was disappointed. My wife found this out when we were getting a cat and decided to name him Hercules to make my five-year-old dream come true.

Kyle is one of our outdoor adventure instructors based in Auckland. He has been working for Adventure Specialties Trust for 3 years and has NZOIA qualifications in rock climbing, bush, and sea kayaking.

1. One of the coolest trips I have been on was going to Aotea Island. We spent 9 days there… sea kayaked all of the way around and the fishing was OOOON!⠀

2. I’m an absolute sucker for rules and only wagged class once in my whole entire schooling career.⠀
⠀
3. One day I accidentally drove over my surfboard, it snapped and I was sad.
