What is it like being an intern at Adventure Specialties Trust?

“In a nutshell, this year has been amazing, challenging and rewarding. I have spent a ton of time in the bush, on the water, clinging on to walls and dangling from ropes. All in the company of a supportive and diverse team of people. The clients that I worked with were from all walks of life and provided me with opportunities to not just help and facilitate activities for them but also to learn a great deal about myself and who I am.

“This year I also had the opportunity to study Youth Development with Praxis. At first, I wasn’t super keen to do this but have ended up enjoying it just as much as the adventures that I’ve been on. Not only was it a lot of fun but I learnt a lot of incredibly valuable information for anyone wanting to work with youth. Topics included trauma and crisis response, developmental theories, activity/adventure-based learning structure and much, much more.

“This #internship has also been challenging. I found the learning curve to be incredibly steep and, at times, I wondered if I was the right person for the job. However, what got me through these times was the wonderful people that I get to work with. In sharing my struggles with them, I found that I wasn’t the first (and won’t be the last) to feel this way. Everyone at Adventure Specialties Trust genuinely wants the best for their teammates.”

Adventure Specialties Trust offers several internship positions every year, normally two spots in Auckland and two spots in Christchurch. Applications are now open for joining the team as an intern for 2023!

Outdoor adventure + youth development

The internship is designed for people who are wanting to take their career in the direction of youth development through outdoor adventure. 

As an intern, you will work towards a Certificate in Youth Development (Level 4), studying two days a week with Praxis, an education provider specialising in youth development. While studying, you will also receive on-the-job practical work experience with us by joining our team three days a week. You will help us to organise and lead a variety of different outdoor adventure programmes in a variety of different pursuits, including rock climbing, abseiling, mountain biking, caving, coasteering, hiking, bush skills, alpine, sea kayaking, surfing, and more!

This combination of study and work experience will head you in the direction of gaining valuable NZOIA outdoor leadership qualifications and NZQA credits, both of which are necessary to work in the outdoor adventure industry. Plus there will be the opportunity to continue working with us as an instructor, once your internship finishes.

Our annual #internship programme is open for applications for 2023!

There are two spots available in Auckland and two spots in Christchurch.

The internship is designed for people who are wanting to take their career in the direction of youth development through outdoor adventure.

Why intern with us?

Working hard or hardly working?!? Our new interns, Oli and Micah, working hard on their kayak block course. They headed up north with Mark, our training manager, to the beautiful beaches of Whananaki, Northland, and spent time together learning about kayaking: technical paddling skills, rescue techniques, marine weather reading, personal paddling techniques, safety skills, and group management. And, of course, cooking dinner together on the beach in the late afternoon sun.
