Raft building gives our participants a chance to try something new (like tying knots), a chance to work together as a team or give leadership a go, a chance to be outdoors in the beautiful sunshine and fresh air, and a chance to create happy memories with friends, which mean they are more likely to try to recreate other positive outdoor experiences when they are back home with their own friends and families.

Surfing with Recreate

Recreate NZ is a non-profit that provides life-changing experiences to young people with disabilities.

Adventure Specialties Trust partners with Recreate NZ to create challenging and fun outdoor adventure activities for the Recreate youth.

This time, we gave the guys the opportunity to give surfing a go at Omaha Beach in Auckland. As well surfing, we had tons of fun playing around in the water and trying some team-building activities, like walking on top of a row of surfboards.

“Harmony loved the Recreate camp. You may not have been aware but it has been a struggle to get Harmony’s anxiety low enough to attend. Due to [her friend] also going, and his encouragement, she finally made it and had the best time.

She now wants to sign up for everything. Hahaha. Which is great.

Last week, we ran an outdoor adventure programme, in partnership with Recreate, an amazing organisation that creates life-changing opportunities for young people with disabilities.

“To start 2022 on a great note, we experienced kayaking, raft-building, slack-lining, hiking, fishing and more in the Waitakere Ranges. These pursuits were all made possible by the incredible and supportive team of Adventure Specialties.

For some youth, they were able to give these things a go for the first time, and we are so impressed by how these challenges were met with confidence!”
