WHAT: IGNITE is an adventure therapy youth camp, where we combine ADVENTURE (kayaking, bush walking, high ropes, etc.) with THERAPY (like group activities and facilitated discussions, one-on-one chats with our caring instructors), with time and space built in for rest, reflection, and spending time outdoors in nature with its proven therapeutic benefits.

WHY: This camp is aimed at young people who might be struggling at the moment – maybe with anxiety, stress, depression, or other mental health challenges.

WHERE: We will be based at an adventure camp in Ahuroa (north of Auckland) with one overnight camping trip during the week (there is also a South Island camp, check our website for more info).

WHO: Young adults (aged 15-18 years old). We have extremely limited spaces so please get in touch sooner rather than later! Our staff will include a qualified mental health professional and one or two highly experienced outdoor instructors.

WHEN: The IGNITE camp happens most school holidays. The next one is during the September school holidays. Five days of fun! Monday 25th – Friday 29th September 2023.

Do you want to build the confidence to try new things?

Do you want to feel more comfortable with other people in a group setting? Want to learn better ways to cope with stress and anxiety? Are you wanting to feel better about yourself and more hopeful about your future?

Our IGNITE Camp might be for you!

Join a group of 6-8 other young women (plus 2 facilitators) as we head off for six days and five nights of adventure in the stunning native bush of Marlborough Sounds. We will combine outdoor adventure activities (like bush walking, sea kayaking and mountain biking) with facilitated group discussions, one-on-one sessions, space for personal reflection, throughout a week of having fun, laughter and some good deep chats about life.

Here’s some feedback from a parent:

“I just wanted to drop you a line to say thank you so much for organising the girls journey that [my daughter] joined you for in the holidays. Her school holiday time spent discovering the world outside of a teenagers darkened bedroom was exactly what she (and her parents) needed. We can see the benefit of the experiences and challenges of the trip in her, now she is back and, despite being apprehensive about going without knowing anyone else, she tells us she thoroughly enjoyed the week.”

What’s happening?

Join us as we head off for 5 days and 4 nights of adventure in the stunning native bush of Ahuroa, north of Auckland. It’s during the school holidays (3-7 July 2023).

What will we do?

We will combine outdoor adventure activities (like tramping, kayaking and a high ropes confidence course) with group therapy activities like team-building exercises, facilitated group discussions, one-on-one sessions, space for personal reflection, and simply being outside in nature with its proven therapeutic benefits.

Outcomes

We use this combination of outdoor adventure plus therapy activities to help you work towards these positive outcomes:
> Increased self-worth,
> A better toolkit for building hauora (health and wellbeing),
> Stronger whanaungatanga (kinship or community belonging),
> A greater hope for a future with purpose, and
> Stronger taha wairua (spiritual wellness).

Our IGNITE Adventure Therapy Youth Camp last week was a rip-roaring success! Next one coming up on the Term 2 school hols (3rd-7th July) so sign up now!

What is the IGNITE camp? It’s five days, four nights of outdoor adventure activities (kayaking, zip line, high ropes, hiking) mixed with group therapy activities (facilitated discussions, group activities, one-on-one chats with our qualified mental health professional, etc.).

IGNITE is perfect for young people (15-18 years old) who might be struggling at the moment, maybe dealing with anxiety or depression, stress at home or school, etc.

Below is one of the updates that we received during the camp last week from Emily, the qualified mental health professional on the programme.

“Our campers have really challenged themselves over the last couple of days. They have been paddling down the Puhoi river, where they had some great conversations with both the instructors and each other. Today we hit the high ropes course and each person had a go at Jacob’s ladder [a giant wooden ladder that you climb up in pairs], and the zip line.

“We headed off into the bush this evening and everyone set up their own tents and joined in on group conversations around the fire.

“Alongside the activities we have held space for conversations about self-worth, self-acceptance and strategies for coping with difficult feelings/emotional regulation.

“Connections have been made amongst the campers and they are enjoying (device-free!) spare time playing card games, chess and chatting with each other.

“We are looking forward to going coasteering tomorrow!”
