Instructors

Daniel Pennington - Instructor

Daniel joined Adventure Specialties Trust in March 2007.

Daniel has completed a two year Christian Outdoor Recreation Programme run by the Laidlaw College and Adventure Specialties Trust.

He gained the National Certificate in Outdoor Recreation Instruction (level 5) and a Diploma in Biblical Studies (Youth Track).

In this qualification Daniel majored in Bush. He studied units including instructing clients on multi day trips, instructing clients in flat water kayaking, and instructing clients in abseiling, survival in outdoor environments, human development and learning contemporary youth culture, the idea and practice of youth ministry and an introduction to counselling adolescents.

Daniel also holds the New Zealand Outdoor Instructor Association Bush 1 Award and an outdoor first aid qualification.

In his spare time Daniel likes to surf, tramp and rock climb.

Ben Fensulau - Instructor

Ben joined Adventure Specialties Trust in March 2008

Ben has a Graduate Diploma in Outdoor Education and in Secondary Education. Prior to starting at the Trust Ben worked as an Outdoor Education Teacher at a Catholic College in Bendigo, Australia.

Ben also has an Advanced Wilderness First Aid Certificate and a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Management and Ecology.

Ben loves the outdoor and in his spare time enjoys mountaineering, back country skiing and rock climbing with many personal days under his belt in both Australia and New Zealand.

Sarah Orchard - Instructor

Sarah joined Adventure Specialties Trust in February 2009.

Sarah has a BA Hons in Outdoor Adventure with Sports Development gained from the University of Exeter in England.

Sarah came to New Zealand from England in December 2008 seeking a career in outdoor adventure, which would enable her to utilise, and build on, the knowledge and experience that she gained during her three years at university.

The course gave Sarah an in depth knowledge of the theories, concepts and principles of outdoor education and enabled her to develop facilitation techniques in areas of outdoor adventure including climbing, kayaking, moorland and mountain walking.

She says “New Zealand has a reputation for being the outdoor adventure capital of the world and it’s certainly living up to its expectation. The more I see of New Zealand the more I fall in love with it”.

Sarah is passionate about working with young people and she loves tramping and kayaking. She plays Lacrosse and likes drinking tea.

Steffen Poepjes - Instructor

Steffen joined Adventure Specialties Trust in August 2008.

Steffen completed a Diploma in Outdoor Recreation Leadership at the Auckland University of Technology in 2008 where he majored in White Water Kayaking.

He also has an outdoor first aid certificate and has completed a day skipperÕs course.

Steffen is passionate about the outdoors and in his spare time enjoys white water kayaking, tramping and rock climbing.
