Breaking free of the Urewera Ranges you make short work of the Rangitaiki plains to the cappuccino servility of tourist Taupo. Then it’s a paddle down the Eastern bays of the great lake. Kaimanawa – “there’s food on the wind” said the great Chief Tia. But you can only smell victory as you mount the final assault on Ruapehu’s summit.
